Princeville's Makai Golf Club Incorporates New Troon Program To Speed Up Play

Princeville, Kauai, Hawaii (October 8, 2013) -  Pace of play is the number one complaint among golfers, and Princeville’s spectacular Makai Golf Club, managed by Troon Golf, is addressing this issue by incorporating the new “Troon Values Your Time” program into their operations, ensuring that all golfers have a thoroughly enjoyable—and faster—experience on their award-winning course.

“No one likes their round of golf to drag into five hours or more due to slow players,” says Alex Nakajima, General Manager of the Makai Golf Club.  “On the other hand, no golfers believe that they themselves are slow players. The new program provides us a way to communicate a time goal for golfers and keep them on track for everyone’s benefit. We are showing golfers it is possible to play the game a little faster and still enjoy it.” Nakajima notes that the “Troon Values Your Time” program has been a great success at the course, shaving anywhere from 12 to 30 minutes off a round of golf, and comments from Makai guests regarding the new program have been positive and appreciative.

Makai staff have determined a “Time Par”—the desired and reasonable period of time in which to play a round of golf on the 18-hole course--of 4 hours and 18 minutes. Golfers are encouraged to be under the Time Par but never over, and that is communicated to guests in numerous ways: when they call for a tee time, upon check-in at the golf shop, and again by the starter just before tee off. “Troon Values Your Time” signage is provided as a reminder at the golf shop and starters’ area, and pace-of-play timing and tips are displayed in golf carts and on the first tee. Makai golf professionals monitor the on-course play throughout the day, encouraging slower golfers to pick up the pace. Catch-up tees have been created on all par 5s, shortening those long holes to only 200 yards so golfers can effectively move ahead in their play if they have fallen behind. In addition, the first six tee times of the day, from 7:00 to 8:03 a.m., are set aside as “Pacesetter Times” for faster players who will establish a brisk pace of play for the course in the very first hour.

The 27-hole Makai Golf Club at Princeville, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design, features two uniquely individual courses: the magnificent 18-hole Makai Course, incorporating serene lakes and stunning ocean coastline; and the leisurely 9-hole Woods Course, winding through native woodlands against a backdrop of lush mountain views. The Makai Course underwent a comprehensive 14-month renovation, reopening in early 2010 to rave reviews for its immaculate condition and playability. The course is extraordinarily beautiful and was named one of the Top 5 Great Golf Settings in the U.S. by National Geographic Traveler. The Makai Course is currently ranked by Golf Digest as one of "America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses" and by GOLF Magazine and Golfweek as one of the top 5 public courses in Hawaii.
