Robert Trent Jones Jr. To Oversee Renovation Of Kauai’s Top-Ranked Prince Golf Course

PRINCEVILLE AT HANALEI, KAUAI, HAWAII (February 25, 2011) – The renovation of Hawaii’s top-ranked Prince Golf Course, located at Princeville Resort on Kauai’s north shore, has been expanded to include additional course upgrades, and the firm of Robert Trent Jones II has signed on to oversee the project.

The Prince Course closed on January 29 in order to complete a bunker renovation that began in September 2010. In addition to the bunker project, the scope of the renovation will now include refurbishment of the greens with new Seashore Paspalum grass, tee leveling throughout the course, improved drainage, and installation of state-of-the-art irrigation to ensure world-class turf conditions on the course. The greens renovation will also include minor reshaping of the 1st and 18th holes. To complete the renovation and allow sufficient time for the new greens to grow in, the reopening of the Prince Course is now tentatively planned for October 2011.

The award-winning firm of RTJII will serve as lead architect on the project, under the direction of Chairman and Master Architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and President and Chief Design Officer Bruce Charlton.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to restore and refresh this wonderful top 100 golf course,” notes Jones. “Superb playing conditions on the reconstructed green surfaces, refurbished bunkers and widened fairways will be appreciated by discriminating golfers of all skill levels. While we ‘polish this gem’ we will be focusing on enhancing shot values and playability on every hole. We invite all golfers to enjoy the enhanced splendors of Hawaii’s top golf course when unveiled again this October.”

Heritage Links, recognized as a Certified Builder by the Golf Course Builders Association of America, has been selected to manage all golf and club operations in addition to handling the construction and renovation work. The company has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognition for its work, including the Builder Excellence Award in 2007 for its work at Liberty National Golf Course (New Jersey) and in 2008 for Chambers Bay Golf Course (Washington). Heritage Links also completed the renovation of the Princeville Makai Course alongside RTJII in 2009.

“The Prince Course is rated as Hawaii’s #1 golf course and we are truly honored to have been selected to renovate and manage the facility and are excited to work with the ownership to provide a first class golf experience to all guests,” commented Jon O’Donnell, President of Heritage Links.

The spectacular Princeville Prince Golf Course, originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., opened in 1990 and has been consistently rated as one of the top resort courses in the nation. It is ranked by Golf Digest as the number one course in the State of Hawaii and is the only course in the state to be recognized on the magazine’s prestigious list of America’s “Top 100 Greatest Courses” for 2009/2010. The Prince is known equally for its challenging play and magnificent layout, following the natural contours of the land and encompassing 390 acres of rolling terrain, tropical jungles, gullies, streams, and waterfalls.
