Creamer wins Fields Open in Hawaii.
KAPOLEI, Hawaii, Feb. 23, 2008 – When it counted the most, Paula Creamer turned it on. With four birdies in her last five holes, including consecutive birdies on the final three, Creamer overcame 36-hole leader Jeong Jang (64-68-69=201, -15) to win the Fields Open in Hawaii by one stroke at 16-under-par 200 (66-68-66). It is Creamer's fifth LPGA Tour victory and second in her last four events, after winning The Mitchell Company LPGA Tournament of Champions last November.
"We had to do it," said Creamer, who battled flu-like symptoms en route to earning $195,000 for her win. "I knew that coming down the stretch, just that pressure and knowing if you want to win this golf tournament you have to make this putt. That kind of took that momentum into 17 and made that one, and then into 18."
Creamer started the round at 10-under-par and two strokes behind Jang. With birdies on the first and third holes, she had closed the gap and the duo was tied at 12-under. Jang took a one-stroke lead by making a 10-foot birdie putt on the sixth hole. Neither Creamer nor Jang could make a move until both birdied the par-5, 470-yard 14th hole. Jang took her largest of the day with a birdie on 15, but then Creamer rose to the top with her birdies on the remaining holes, sealing the deal when her 6-iron from 164 yards landed five feet from the hole for the birdie putt to win.
Sorenstam still leads ADT Points. Annika Sorenstam rallied in her last 36 holes at the Fields Open in Hawaii (70-66-68=204, -12) to a fourth-place finish and her second consecutive top-five finish in 2008 after winning last week's SBS Open at Turtle Bay. Her performances have netted her 232,112 ADT Points and lead the LPGA Playoffs 2008. With her win, Paula Creamer (66-68-66=200, -16) is now second in the race with 212,384 ADT Points. These rankings also reflect their current standings on the 2008 LPGA Official Money List. The LPGA Playoffs 2008 splits the 2008 LPGA season into two halves, in which players will qualify for the 32-player season ADT Championship via a combination of Winner Events (official LPGA Tour events with purses of at least $2 million) and ADT Points. The final field will gather at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., Nov. 20-23 to compete for the largest paycheck in women's professional golf: $1 million.
Creamer sets tournament record. Paula Creamer's 16-under-par 200 (66-68-66) at the Fields Open in Hawaii not only secured her victory over Jeong Jang (64-68-69=201, -15), but also set a tournament record for a winning score. The previous mark of 14-under-par 202 was set by Meena Lee in 2006 and in 2007 by Stacy Prammanasudh. This year, Lindsey Wright's 14-under-par 202 (69-66-67) resulted in a third-place finish.
