MAUNA KEA GOLF COURSE TO CLOSE FOR MAJOR UPGRADE
MAUNA KEA RESORT, HI — Prince Resorts Hawaii (PRH) announced today
the Mauna Kea Golf Course will be closed for more than a year to undergo a
comprehensive upgrading from tee-to-green that will add renewed luster to one of
Hawaii's most recognizable golf courses.
The golf course, clubhouse and 19th Hole Restaurant will close May 1, 2007, and
are expected to re-open in fourth quarter 2008.
PRH President Donn Takahashi commented, "We're making a major capital
investment to revitalize one of Hawaii's longstanding golf treasures at Mauna Kea
Resort and ensure that its future appeal to golfers will be secure."
Planning, designing and managing the course improvements will be Rees Jones,
a renowned golf course architect, and son of Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Mauna Kea's
original designer. The greens, fairways and rough will all be replaced with new hybrids
of turf that can be groomed for the skill levels of both resort and professional golfers.
The bunkers will be restored to their original look with all the sand replaced. Rees Jones
has said his vision is to maintain the integrity of his father's design, while utilizing
today's technology to be more efficient in caring for the course.
In addition, the clubhouse and restaurant will be renovated.
Employees of the golf course, clubhouse and restaurant are being furloughed
during the closure, with the resort offering re-employment when the course re-opens.
The 18-hole, par-72, 7,165-yard Mauna Kea Golf Course opened in December
1964. Recognized by golfers worldwide for its signature oceanfront #3 hole, the course
offers dramatic elevation changes, large undulating greens, 120 bunkers, and some of
the most spectacular panoramic ocean and mountain views found in the islands.
