Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the Makena North Course opened in 1993 to rave reviews. Today, this spectacular layout continues to reaffirm its reputation as one of Maui’s most spectacular golf gems.
The North Course feels more like a nature walk than a golf course, with captivating mountain views of Haleakala Crater and sweeping views of the blue Pacific Ocean. Hawaiian rock walls are constant reminders of the Hawaii of yesteryear, and natural gullies and stream beds have been left in their natural state.
The course winds its way up the slopes of Haleakala to elevations where the views of the Pacific Ocean and islands beyond are absolutely jaw-dropping.
On the front nine the 6th hole is a unique par 4 with a fairway divided by a deep ravine offering players a couple of different options. The 7th is a beautiful short par 3 played to a wide but shallow green with the magnificent West Maui Mountains as a backdrop. And the 8th is a long par 4 that plays slightly down the hill and then back up and is a hole where par is always a good score. On the back nine the 12th is a dramatic par 3 with Molokini and Koholawe in the background followed by the short downhill par 4, 13th … a hole which is actually drivable by long hitters. And the 14th is a sweeping par 5 that plays downhill all the way but is one of the longest holes in Hawaii.
