Waikoloa Beach Resort

As diverse as the BIG Island is …so is the Waikoloa Beach Resort. At Waikoloa there are historic and culturally significant sites mixed with environmentally significant sites all within a sprawling 1350-acre oceanfront resort destination.

The King’s Trail is a window into history. This smoothed pathway is a corridor through rough lava beds. This corridor was used to connect a village to a boat launch area, a swimming spot or a farm area. These trails also often linked various significant archeological locations.

Here at Waikoloa along a one mile stretch of lava rock trail you will encounter preserved and protected petroglyphs dating back hundreds of years. These carved images depict scenes of family life in ancient Hawaii.

At Waikoloa one of the environmentally significant and protected sites is 12 acres of Anchialine pools. These anchialine pools are found only in the Hawaiian Islands and provide the principal habitat for two unique and rare small red shrimp. The Waikoloa anchialine pond preservation area was established to protect the biological and geological integrity of this unique habitat for scientific and educational purposes.

Waikoloa’s resort amenities are plentiful with a great variety of accommodations to choose from. You’ll find a collection of ocean side world-class hotels including the wonderful Hilton Waikoloa Village situated on 62 acres of fun and the wonderful oceanfront Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa and more…

Waikoloa provides the best retail facilities on the whole island. Stroll around the King’s Shops, a charming center that blends trendy upscale designer boutiques with small shops rich in Hawaiiana. Be sure to also check out the Queens’ Marketplace too …with its array of upscale retail, restaurants and services you are sure to find that perfect gift for family and friends back home.

The two golf courses at Waikoloa offer a wonderful contrast in both style and character. Whether you are at the King’s Course or the Beach Course the scenery is spectacular and there are plenty of good golf holes.

The Beach Course is Waikoloa’s first, opening back in the early 1980’s. Architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed a very user-friendly layout that plays to a par of 70 and provides a challenging and pleasant resort golf experience. The course winds its way around historic petroglyph fields and literally was carved out of an ancient lava flow. The most dominant feature on the Beach Course is the bunkering; that is aesthetically very pleasing while at the same time being very strategically positioned. The most well known hole on the Beach Course is undoubtedly #12 a dogleg left that takes you right
out to the ocean. Take a little time to soak this one in because this may well be the most spectacular oceanfront par five in Hawaii. At just 6600 yards the length of the Beach Course is not intimidating but there is a premium on accuracy here.

The King’s Course at the Waikoloa Beach Resort is a real jewel. Architects Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish have created a unique experience here…a course with a links-style feel but with stunning views of the Big Island’s volcanoes… not your every day combination. Like the BIG Island itself the 18 holes that make up the Kings Course have tremendous diversity. There are some very long par fours and some very short ones like #5. If you are a long hitter go ahead and take Weiskopf’s challenge here and try to drive the green. On the back nine #13 is just 337 yards and offers a variety of options for how to play the hole. But the Kings Course’s diversity doesn’t end there. Here you’ll find some very large bunkers and some very small ones. You’ll be able to enjoy acres of beautiful vegetation and many more acres of stark, black lava. But don’t let the lava intimidate you.

In addition to the two courses … Waikoloa’s other golf facilities are terrific … The King’s clubhouse is unique in design and style, the practice facilities are excellent and the service provided by Waikoloa’s friendly staff is top of the line. At the remarkable Waikoloa Beach Resort you really feel welcome.
